Another reasonably priced activity

It's not the least expensive that I found, it doesn't qualify for the family activities for under $10, but it's not too bad. & It's fun. A couple of weekends ago we took Zoe (the boyfreind's daughter, age 10) and her freind to Portland Pottery on a whim, knowing very little about it. Turns out you can rent space in the studio for an hour for just $8 per person. A large bag of clay will run you $12. We paid for the girls and stood around and watched them. It was cool though....I mean, don't you remember watching wheel throwing on PBS kids shows when you were little and really wanting to do it? Maybe it was just me. But for $8 you can. You're on your own once you pay the $8 (unless you are booking a lesson, which would be more), but it's pretty simple: You wet the clay and your hands and keep a bucket of water nearby to keep your hands wet the whole time. To spin the wheel you just press the pedal with your foot while you shape the clay with your hands....pretty simple stuff. It's important to make sure your kids (or you) clean up the area you've used afterwards. They will fire items you've made in the kiln for $1 more per item. Pretty cool. They also do birthday parties for $16 a kid. Not the cheapest I've seen (the cheapest I've found for a public venue to do birthday parties was the USM planetarium at $4.00 a child), but definatly comparable price wise to birthday parties at Happy Wheels or the Children's Museum. You can also book private groups and classes for your freinds, which I'm thinking I might like to do for my birthday, actually. This is indoors so it's a nice option for those winter birthdays in Maine.

Kids classes are also comperable to other lesson activities in the area and might be a nice option for the winter blahs in Maine.

located at 118 Washington AvePortland, ME, up near the Cumberland Ave end of Washington Ave. It's on the same side of the road as Silly's, but past that a bit. (207) 772-4334
