I can not ice skate. Nor can I ski, for that matter. I grew up somewhere so far south that water does not freeze and snow is something school children dream of in hopes that they will, just one time, have a snow day. It usually does not happen. Anyway, so here I am, a person who calls Portland, Maine home and loves just about everything about the area. I'm raising a kid here alone, and all his friends have parents who probably have played winter sports. The Portland Hockey Trust was great for this reason. They have staff on hand who will skate with your kids so they can learn how to stay upright, and will work with them in small, loosely structured groups to learn the basics of hockey. Get there early as equiptment is on loan. Usually there are enough skates, but knee pads and all that often a mix matched event. If you have your own or can find some in the freebee section of Craigslist, great. FYI, the Ice Arena also does birthday parties super cheap! Click on the link below and go see.
"The Portland Hockey Trust:Portland Hockey Trust is a free opportunity for all Portland kids in grades 3-5 toexperience the sport of hockey despite their financial situation. If you would like to getinvolved in this program, please contact Tom Edwards at (H) 865-3642.“The Portland Hockey Trust promotes thephysical, Emotional and social well-being ofyouth in Portland by providing opportunitiesto play hockey regardless of abilities to pay”
Check out other programs through Portland Parks & Rec. They do offer scholarships and financial aid for these activities. When my son was turning 4 or 5 I was struggling a bit. I used the money I had to throw him a decent birthday at the Children's Museum and obtained a scholarship for swimming lessons through Portland Parks & Rec. The swimming lessons were his gift from me that year and he was really happy get them. Anyway, given the amount of activities listed below your kids shouldn't be bored in the winter.
